The Lamb, Necessary, Promised, Given

I. Necessary

A. Sin grieves God. Genesis 6:5, 6.

B. Blood is required. Hebrews 9:22; Romans 6:23; Hebrews 9:27.

II. Promised

A. A Pre-history decision. Revelation 13:8.

B. A human Lamb. Hebrews 10:4, 5.

C. The Lamb identified. John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7; 1 Peter 1:19; Isaiah 53:7.

III. Given

A. Divine initiative. Romans 5:8; John 3:16.

B. Our substitute. Isaiah 53:4-6, 12; 1 Peter 2:24; Hebrews 9:28.

C. The Sacrificial Lamb. John 1:29; Ephesians 5:2; Hebrews 9:13-14; 1 Peter 3:18; Isaiah 53:3-7.

IV. The Gift

A. Unspeakable. 2 Corinthians 9:15; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8.

B. Expensive.

1. He was forsaken. Mark 14:50.

2. He was slandered. Mark 14:55, 56.

3. He was abused, spit upon, beat, scourged. Matthew 20:18, 19; 26:67; 27:30; Mark 14:65; 15:17-19; Luke 23:65; John 19:1-3; Lamentations 3:30; Isaiah 50:6. Crown of thorns, the whip, the spikes. Matthew 27:27-31. Beard torn off. Isaiah 52:14.

C. He was given for our purchase. Colossians 1:14; Matthew 20:28; 1 Corinthians 6:20.

D. The prupose of the substitution: Why would the King of Glory do such an agonizing & costly thing? Ezekiel 33:11; 1 Samuel 12:22; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4.

E. Voluntary. John 10:17-18; 19:10,11.
